Some of the most precious patients we care for at Apple Healthcare are the youngest! So let’s talk about what you should look for when choosing your kid’s chiropractor.
1. Does Your Kid’s Chiropractor Do Age-Appropriate Adjustments?
The most common question we get asked about chiropractic care for kids is: “is it safe? “
The short answer is “yes.”
Adults and kids bodies are very different. Children’s bones have not fully developed and are mostly made up of cartilage. Because of this, kids do not require as much pressure to be realigned. Therefore, when adjusting a child, the amount of force used should be very low, about what you would use to check the ripeness of an avocado.
Adjusting children is a well-studied practice and you can find more information on chiropractic safety in young children at the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association.
Ask any potential chiropractor for your kids what their techniques and methods for adjusting children are, and steer away from ones that cannot give a detailed explanation of both the similarities and differences between how they adjust adults and kids.
2. Can Your Kid’s Chiropractor Explain the Benefits?
Age-appropriate chiropractic adjustments can benefit young children, even infants. Birth is often a traumatic experience for a newborn. Chiropractic reduces structural stress and misalignment in the spine, especially after a difficult delivery.
Regular adjustments can reduce:
- Abdominal issues, such as colic or reflux
- Nursing complications
- Delays in meeting milestones
- Trouble with sleeping
- Frequent ear infections
As a child learns how to walk and run, they are more likely to fall, which creates dysfunction in the sacrum.
