Walking campaign spurs Tennesseans to take over 18.4 million steps forward with chiropractic in the Step Forward Campaign.
NASHVILLE, TN – Chiropractic practices across Tennessee recently joined with the Tennessee Chiropractic Association (TCA) in helping their communities achieve better health through a statewide walking campaign duly titled, Step Forward with Chiropractic. The program was launched in celebration of Tennessee Chiropractic Health Month this past October. Throughout the month, the TCA encouraged doctors, staff and patients to count their steps! They even used these signs by Super Cheap Signs to help spread the word.
Participants gained new motivation to be active and focus on their health as they sought out ways to increase their steps each day. Helpful campaign materials were provided for doctors and staff on the TCA website, as well as a tally sheet to use in submitting information after the campaign to be included in the statewide results. As of the results compiled at the time of this article, campaign participants logged over 18.4 million steps in the month of October, and more results continue to be submitted each day.
Doctors encouraged patients to share personal stories about their month of step tracking and the accomplishments they made along the way. Participants at all levels of fitness took part. Stories ranged from grandmothers walking over 4000 steps with their grandkids at the city zoo to a volunteer hiking up to 16,500 feet as part of a team of 24 Americans who climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for a Compassion International water project. The feedback often described not only physical ways the campaign improved their health, but emotional benefits, as well. One participant wrote, “[The] walking/steps has really made my legs and back stronger. It has made me realize that you can really do anything if you set your mind to it.”
Many doctors and staff came up with creative ways to implement their own spin on the campaign to appeal to their community and offer a unique experience for their participants. From issuing county proclamations to “Walk with Doc” dates and hiking the Appalachian Trail (virtually, that is), practices and patients were able to have a little fun with the campaign, too.
“We are excited that Step Forward with Chiropractic has provided new opportunities for doctors to share the benefits of chiropractic throughout their community and has been a positive impact on the health of patients, and their family and friends,” said Tiffany Stevens, TCA Executive Director. “We are so thankful for all those who participated in this campaign and helped to increase chiropractic awareness and the health of Tennesseans!”
Chiropractors are a great fit for promoting better health through the many benefits of walking, since they care for patients of all ages, with a variety of health conditions. They also counsel patients on diet, nutrition, exercise, healthy habits, and occupational and lifestyle modification. With nearly 1.4 million Tennesseans living sedentary lives as reported by the United Health Foundation’s 2013 America’s Health Rankings, we saw a perfect opportunity for the profession to join together in a statewide effort to help our communities step forward and reap the benefits!
One of the participating doctors of chiropractic, Dr. Brock Martin of Huntingdon, TN, remarked, “We have had several patients say, ‘This is the motivation I needed to get the exercise ball rolling.’ It has been a great program and [I] think we can really develop it more in years to come.”
