Jessica Cantwell, FNP
Describe what you do:
As a Nurse Practitioner, I focus on healing the entire person from the inside out. People are not always just physically sick or have bodily injuries. They, also, may have emotional or mental ailments that must be taken care of before their physical injuries can heal. Being a nurse practitioner is like being a detective, you have to figure out what is really going on that someone may not be telling you that can cause the symptoms they are presenting with. You have to learn to ask all the right questions to solve the mystery of what may be going on with the patient because things are not always what they appear to be.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you like to be?
I would live in Knoxville, TN in the fall due to our beautiful outdoors and unbeatable football experience. However, I would probably move to an exotic island the rest of the year where I could work on island time and hopefully get to relax and enjoy the scenery!
What is the one piece of advice you would like to share with the world?
I try to live by the old saying, “Never judge a book by its cover.” You really never know what pain and turmoil someone else is going through. You never know what one nice thing you say to someone may give them a brighter outlook on their day or life.
What is your favorite holiday and why?
Christmas because I am pretty much an elf! I love wrapping presents, baking cookies, decorating the Christmas tree while singing Christmas carols, enjoying the lights, and taking my son to enjoy the Fantasy of Trees and other fun Christmas activities. It is a wonderful time to sit by the fire, drink some coffee, and enjoy fun family time.
What is one of your professional goals?
To one day get my doctorate of nursing practice.
What was it that attracted you to your field?
From the time I was 3 years old, I always told my parents I wanted to be a doctor so I could help people. While I did not end up going through medical school, I did find a profession where I could still provide health care and kindness to people in need.
If you had to choose another profession, what would you be doing?
I would be a book critic so I could read books and get paid for it!!! I love to read!
