Heel Pain

Heel pain is one of the most commonly treated conditions in my practice. Some common causes of heel pain are plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, bone spurs, and less frequently fractures or stress fractures. Examination in clinic along with simple tests such as x-ray’s and diagnostic ultrasound are utilized to discern your heel pain cause. Depending on the cause of your heel pain, treatment can range from at home physical therapy exercises, orthotics, bracing, offloading, ultrasound treatments, cold laser treatment, injection therapy and in severe cases, surgery.
Plantar fasciitis: I will talk about plantar fasciitis specifically because it is the cause for about 60% of the heel pain I see in the office. Plantar fasciitis occurs when the ligament on the bottom of your foot becomes too tight and gets inflamed. It commonly causes pain in the heel with the 1st steps in the morning when getting out of bed. It can also cause pain throughout the day while walking. This condition can most often be treated and well controlled with at an at home physical therapy program and orthotics or a change in shoes. We also sometimes inject the heel to help reduce inflammation and promote healing. Cold laser therapy is a newer treatment approach, which stimulates circulation to the area and reduces inflammatory response and helps healing. Cold Laser therapy is painless and has showed good results in treating plantar fasciitis and other tendon and ligament disorders.

  1. One should always use orthotic pads under shoes to support arcs. Do some ankle and foot exercises and massage foot regularly to avoid foot problems.

    • Not all feet require an arch support, however, arch supports can play an important part of treating plantar fasciitis in a lot of patients. Stretching of the calf muscles and intrinsic foot muscles, is always recommended to help improve and prevent heel pain. –Dr. Bradley Gipson
