Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

by in Chiropractic Care, Wellness June 6, 2013

Is Chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?

There are no known contraindications (a condition or factor that serves as a reason to withhold a certain treatment) to chiropractic care throughout pregnancy.  Chiropractors are trained to work with pregnant women.  Some even have special pillows or tables that make it easier for pregnant women to be comfortable.  At Apple Health and Wellness, we have cushions and specific tables that adjust for a pregnant woman’s body, and we use techniques that avoid pressure on the abdomen.

Why Should Pregnant women have Chiropractic care?

Every pregnant woman should have Chiropractic care because of the changes going on in her body.  Some of the following changes could result in misaligned spine or joints:

-Pelvic changes

-Enlarged/protruding abdomen that could increase lower back curve, increased lumbar lordosis

-Postural adaptations from moving different and difference in body size and composition.

Another reason for care is to establish pelvic balance and alignment.  When the pelvis, lumbar spine, thoracic spine or ribs are misaligned it may decrease the amount of room for the developing baby.  This restriction of baby space is called intrauterine constraint.  A misaligned lumbar spine or pelvis may make it difficult for the baby to get in the most beneficial position for delivery.

Benefits of Chiropractic care during pregnancy

-Reduced pain in back, neck and joints

-Maintaining a healthier pregnancy

-Help to control symptoms of nausea, by keeping nervous system functioning better

-Reducing time of labor and delivery, by aligning pelvis and creating space for baby to be delivered

-Preventing potential cesarean deliveries by aligning pelvis
