Aches, Pains, Arthritis and Age

by in Regenerative Medicine June 18, 2019

Aches and pains are often considered an unavoidable by-product of aging. No one can stop or reverse the progression of time, but that doesn’t mean you should automatically accept increased pain and decreased mobility from conditions like Osteoarthritis (OA).

How Osteoarthritis Occurs

As you age, cartilage between the joints can begin to deteriorate.  Cartilage is a flexible connective tissue that is 65-80% water that provides cushioning between joints and bone and makes the joint easy to move.

When cartilage breaks down, it goes from a smooth surface to a rough surface, accelerating deterioration. When bone begins rubbing directly against joints, significant damage and pain can occur.

While acute injuries and long-term overuse can increase the chances of the onset of OA, age-related cartilage deterioration is the primary cause of this condition. Around one in three adults over 60 currently suffer from OA.

Treating OA has advantages beyond just decreasing pain. Increased mobility can lead to a more active lifestyle, with a host of positive health impacts.

Our OA Protocol

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a key part of our protocol to restore function and reduce pain to joints impacted by OA.

Hyaluronic acid is a critical part of of the synovial fluid that helps lubricate between joints and cartilage, but the body produces less of this critical substance as we age.

Not all HA injection options are created equal. Supartz is a pure, natural form of hyaluronic acid. It is the most effective form of HA due to its long-lasting results. Supartz cushions and lubricates your joints and has very few side effects and interactions.

Injections are guided by fluoroscopy to achieve the highest degree of accuracy. According to the American Journal of Sports Medicine, imaging strategies like this are 99 percent accurate versus non-imaging techniques that are only 75 percent accurate. At Apple Healthcare, we never guess, we always see before we start an injection.

We pair HA injections with a physical therapy regimen to restore strength and range of motion to the joint, as well as to correct any unhealthy compensation methods the body may have developed while suffering from joint pain.
